The First Glimpse of Summer

IMG_5900

Like a true Brit, when the sun comes out to play,  I throw myself onto our balcony and savour every moment.

Until very recently, that involved grabbing a towel, and a cushion from the sofa and lying on the hard wooden floor.

We had some good days recently, with temperatures reaching 26°C.

The other weekend, as I mentioned in my post Brunch in Brussels No.4, the boys took a trip to Ikea. They were tasked with purchasing the table and chairs that James and I had spied the weekend before.

Whilst I waited for them to return, I lay on the balcony in my newly purchased sun bed from Brico.

Brico is a little like B&Q, full of handy things for the home and garden, as well as things like BBQs and sun beds. Luckily, there is one close by where we can grab the bits’n’bobs one needs to be a grown up – like a new tap head. Anyway when purchasing the sun beds, we got a little over excited about the summer and went ahead and bought a BBQ.

When the boys arrived home, they got to work on building the table and chairs and I started my first ever BBQ. Ok, well, with some welcome supervision to get it started and a bucket of water – just in case -that was thankfully not needed, and ta-da, it all came together, they built and I cooked.

We had homemade burgers with grilled halloumi, chicken kebabs and prawn skewers, served with salad, roasted vegetables and asparagus (all fresh from the market at Flagey – that I blogged about here).

We are loving asparagus at the moment, placed in boiling water for around four minutes then soaked in some salty President butter.

Unfortunately, well this is Brussels, I have not seen the sun here since that lovely weekend, but it filled us with hope for long summer evenings on our balcony enjoying our terrace and BBQ with friends – which are hopefully just around the corner *she says optimistically having already seen this weeks dreadful forecast*.
